Throw Another Penny
(Jon T. Howard)
Throw Another Penny
She lights a cigarette at the crack of dawn and pours herself a cup of black coffee
She doesn’t want to do it face another day so she says a little prayer to find a way
She looks over at the stranger on the other side of the bed
Most days wishing he was gone
But she’ll never leave him no she never will
Something in her faith keeps her holding on
She tells me that she loves him
Without conviction in the words she says
She just needs to be held with reassurance
To find a little strength in herself again
So I’ll throw another penny in the wishing well
Save a ray of hope until tomorrow
Never stop believing in the fairy tale
That love will pay you back for all your sorrow
Her nights are lonely and the dramas never end tranquility is seldom found
The years of pain have wilted away her will so in her liquid courage she drowns
I’m sure there’s more to the story then I will ever know
But it hurts so much to watch her fall
Every night she pours herself a drink and then two three and four
Until she feels nothing at all
She swears she’s gonna leave him
The next time he breaks her heart again
But she knows so much about forgiveness
So he will keep on taking and she will always give
So I’ll throw another penny in the wishing well
Save a ray of hope until tomorrow
Never stop believing in the fairy tale
That love will pay you back for all your sorrow
How is it we learn to live
With wounds that never heal
I tell myself she’ll be alright
But I see the sadness and despair crying from her eyes
So I’ll throw another penny in the wishing well
Save a ray of hope until tomorrow
Never stop believing in the fairy tale
That love will pay you back for all your sorrow
