Twelve Step Man
(Jon T. Howard)
Twelve Step Man
As I headed out of Texas on my way to the west coast
I was still wrestling with a chapter in my life I hadn’t quite closed
He was always a stranger even though I called him dad
No I never did know him too well that twelve-step man
No I never did know him too well that twelve-step man
I stopped for gas in Las Cruces then I drove all through the night
Fueled by truck stop coffee just me and my conscious trying to set things right
He left a legacy of heartache in the wake of his path
Like a shotgun always loaded misguided by fates right hand
No I never did know him too well that twelve-step man
Sometimes teardrops sometimes teardrops they don’t fall like rain
Sometimes teardrops, teardrops they don’t fall like rain
He would try to go cold turkey but it never really worked
It was just a matter of time before all his will gave into the hurt
His tone was dark and edgy like an old Fender Strat
He could be cold and condescending that twelve step man
No I never did quite understand the ways of that twelve-step man
No I never did know him too well that twelve-step man
He was born in a state of misery, hitched a hell bound train
After a life long dance with demons he died in the Lone Star state
He always preached the word of the good book gave me all the love he had
But his refuge in the bottle only left him broken bitter and sad
No I never did quite understand the ways of that twelve-step man
No I never did know him too well that twelve-step man
Sometimes teardrops sometimes teardrops they don’t fall like rain
Sometimes teardrops, teardrops they don’t fall like rain
